       School Visits

For Primary Schools

Your chance to visit a working farm.

'Learn by doing whilst having fun at the same time'

Bring your classes or groups to the Mohair Centre for a school visit with a difference.
No battling to identify your children amongst other children - your school or group may treat the farm as their own for the day.
Activities will be tailored to the age group concerned.
Your visit will be lead by Jacky Webb, a qualified and experienced teacher.

A typical day we run combines Farming and Textiles in two 60-90 minute sessions with packed lunch in between.

Morning Session: Farming

We encourage children to experience what farming really is and to think themselves into the role of the farmer. Under the guidance of Jacky Webb, a qualified teacher who is experienced with groups of both children and adults, participation is encouraged. The children will work through routine stock-tasks in adult-led groups using problem- solving techniques.

They will involve themselves with all types of farm animals, the angora goat, the dairy goat, sheep, cattle, calves, pigs and chickens. Milking and bottle feeding are always popular. For any children or adults who are unsure of animals the Rabbit and Guinea Pig Village is the group to choose. It is always stressed that nobody has to go in with any animals if they don't want to.

Afternoon Session: Textiles

From fibre producing animals through processing their fleece to the finished product. The children will be able to follow the process through to the finished garment. Again we use the 'hands-on' group approach and try to get the children to have a go where possible.

Each child will take home a bag of things they've made; spinning, carding, weaving and feltmaking.
